I'm going to do a blind run, see how much I remember without breaking out the strategy guide. I will, of course, have to use it for the chocobo breeding.
Ha... all I ever needed a guide for was the stuff with Chocobos. As for the game itself, I made it to the end without a guide.
(but haven't truly finished it; I got to the final battle with Sephiroth, went and maxed out my characters, and pretty much all that's left before I get the guts to take on that silver-haired nut is to max out 'Knights of the Round'...)
